Japan – Nationwide LOD2 Building Dataset
Cityweft’s Japan building dataset is derived from nationwide LOD2 building data published by Japan’s government through the MLIT-led Project PLATEAU initiative. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) is Japan’s official authority overseeing urban data infrastructure, and Project PLATEAU represents the most comprehensive open 3D city model effort in the country.
Cityweft processes this source data and prepares it for fast, consistent use in 3D city context, site analysis, and early-stage architectural and urban design workflows—while preserving the integrity and intent of the original dataset.
Data source
- Provider: MLIT (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism), Japan
- Base dataset: Project PLATEAU – LOD2 Building Data
Latest update
- The dataset reflects the latest available PLATEAU releases up to 2024, ingested and standardized by Cityweft using a unified processing pipeline across municipalities
Coverage and reliability
- Extensive nationwide coverage, with data available for 267 municipalities across Japan
- Includes major cities such as Yokohama, Osaka, Nagoya, Sapporo, and many others
- High level of detail (LOD2), including roof structures and building geometry suitable for design analysis
- High reliability, as data is produced under a national government initiative
- Variations in data year and completeness may occur between municipalities, depending on local update cycles
Cityweft preparation
To ensure the dataset works smoothly inside the Cityweft platform, the data is:
- Standardized across municipalities with differing source formats
- Cleaned and validated for consistent geometry and topology
- Optimized for fast loading and interactive 3D workflows
- Maintained with clear attribution to MLIT and Project PLATEAU
